Alfred Schmela was born on November 23, 1918 in Dinslaken.
He died on July 20, 1980 in Düsseldorf.

Schmela was a German gallery owner. In 1978 he was made honorary member of the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts.

From 1964 Richter executed numerous commissioned works after passport photographs or family pictures. The portraits of Alfred Schmela are the first works of this kind.
